Part 1: Why build your own VPN?

What you need, and what you need to know before you begin.

Why are we even doing this?

Besides a way to improve networking skills and understanding, the main purpose is to be able to access your home network when away from home. Have you ever been on holiday, and you just want to access BBC iPlayer back home (in the UK), but you don’t want to pay for yet another (VPN) service? Now you can by setting up your own VPN server at home. This will also provide you additional security when using public, untrusted networks (e.g. Airports, Cafés, Hotels, etc.). These are unsafe due to anyone being on the same network, being able to intercept any unencrypted data you send out.

In summary

Why?

  • Cheaper: One upfront cost (~£50) vs a yearly subscription fee to a larger established provider (E.g. NordVPN, ExpressVPN).
  • Security: Using Wireguard allows you to encrypt your data from anywhere in the world.
  • Global Access to your home network: Access your home country (where the VPN is set up) content from anywhere in the world.
  • Educational: Learn about how your network request actually gets routed.
